Notes – Unfortunately, it has not been possible to locate conclusive information relating to who this man was. As you will see from the newspaper story attached, he met a terrible death.

William seems to have been down on his luck in every sense of the word. Aimlessly travelling around looking for odd jobs. In 1942 he was arrested but not charged as a vagrant. At the time of his death, it is reported his occupation was scissor and mower sharpener, but he was working as a fencer at Glenmorgan.

He was camped with Alfred Wharton who found him dead in the campfire. He had severe burns to the lower half of his body. No identification papers were found in his possession to help police identify him so any family members could be notified.

His working companion, was reported as former WWI veteran, Alfred Warton 448, who died within a day of William. Alfred’s surnamee has incorrectly been reported in the newspaper article as Wharton.
