Notes – William Hewins is buried in the Tara Cemetery and the burial records have him listed as W H Hawkins with no date and no headstone information. Thankfully he was a well known and respected member of the Tara community.

It is believed he originally came from England before travelling to Australia and settling in the Tara district. In 1918 he received a visit from Private Cooke who had been an escaped WWI Prisoner of War. It is believed this was Percy Goude Cooke MM 2568 who escaped from a German POW Camp. He travelled through Holland before finally arriving in England on 28 April 1918. Prior to the war, Percy worked as a surveyor axeman and he may have met William while working in the Tara district.

William was very community minded and was a member of many committees in Tara. One of these positions required him being the man on the gate to look after all the monies for various causes. A newspaper article written at the time of his death in 1945, indicated he had a sister living in Canada but there was no mention of any other family.

William lies in an unmarked grave and he is buried between the graves of young Dennis Youngberry who died in 1951 and Mr Harold Goodwin who died in 1946.
