Notes – Sarah Jane was born on December 15, 1894 in Queensland to Margaret Jane (nee Ion) and Thomas Holmes Hird. She had three sisters, Minnie 1887, Isabel 1892 and Doris 1897. Minnie married  Peter Nesen Peterson and Isabel married Harry Fisher Houghton.

Sarah Jane Hird married Charles James McKay on December 19, 1922. The couple had at least four children, Margaret Joan 1923, Heather 1924, Marjory Jean 1925 and Robert James (-1932).

The Electoral rolls show Charles James McKay in 1920 at Goranba, Tara as a selector. The 1923 roll shows Sarah as a housewife who had joined him at Goranba after their marriage.

Sarah no doubt worked hard with her husband to keep her family fed, clothed and happy. She stayed at the same loction from the time she was married until her death.

I have no other information on this lady. As was the case lots of times during this period of time, the wife was often not mentioned in any papers or only mentioned as Mrs Somebody.

Sarah shares her headstone with her husband Charles. Her inscription reads – In loving memory of Sarah McKay Died December 1960 Aged 65 years.
