Notes – Angus Norman McLeod was born into a large family with his parents being Margaret (nee McLean) and John McLeod. The family arrived in Australia from Scotland (being from the Highland clearances) before Angus was born. His siblings were Isabella, Margaret, John, Mary Ann, Ann, Phoebe and Sarah.  Many of the names he used for his own children.

His father John McLeod, was employed as a tenant farmer before he took on the job of being a Pilot Boatman at Maitland. It was while doing this job that John McLeod died. He was trying to save other people from a sinking boat when he too drowned. This left his poor wife with eight kids to look after.

Angus had an uncle who was a saddler in Mailtland, and it appears he must have taken on Angus and another brother because that is what Angus became and stayed doing for his lifetime. How or why he left the New South Wales area and ended up at Blackall Qld, is unknown.

Angus McLeod married Annie Jan Kearney at Blackall on the 22nd August, 1887. Angus and Annie had six kids, but three boys died as infants. His children were John Norman 1889-1889, Sarah 1890, Angus 1893-1893, Ronald 1894, Margaret 1897 and Daniel 1899-1903. Angus youngest son Daniel died in 1903, a year after his mother Annie died.

Angus had moved to Chinchilla by 1909, probably because that area was starting to be developed and there would have been a need for saddlers like himself. He stayed in Chinchilla until 1917 and was in Tara by 1921.

Angus’s census records are : 1909 in Chinchilla as a Saddler, in 1917 Chinchilla, Saddler at Heeny St and in 1921 Tara as a Saddler. His son Ronald was also listed as a saddler in Tara at that time.

Angus has no headstone to mark his final resting place.
