NAUGHTIN, Jean Greig

Name – NAUGHTIN, Jean Greig
Born – 13/12/1907
Died – 4/11/1960
Location – No 13 Old Methodist Section
Mother – Eliza Catherine Robson Tully
Father – Ernest Smallacombe

Notes – Jean was born in 1907 to Eliza Catherine Robson (nee Tully) and Ernest Smallacombe at Nhill, Victoria.

She arrived with her family and setteled in the 26 Mile area. Her brothers and sister were Gilbert, Mavis, Jack and Jeff. Jack and Jean loved to go to fancy dress dances as each other. They could do this as they were the same height.

The family then moved to Toowoomba where Jean was an avid tennis player and worked at Peterson’s Darling Downs Boot Factory. She was highly regarded there which is evident by the gift they gave her for her wedding present, as seen in her newpaper article.

Jean married James Clarence (Clarrie) Naughtin on the 11th of March, 1931. They moved to Bell to dairy farm for a couple of years and then in August 1934 they went back to Tara where Clarrie and his brother Wal had a general store. They lived in a house Clarrie had built which was still there in 2025. It is situated directly behind the Commercial Hotel.

Jean liked to potter with arts and crafts. She wasn’t fond of domestic duties by all accounts. She was a good horse rider.

Jean died after a car accident in Redcliffe where she and Clarrie were on holidays. Clarrie was driving the car when another car hit them. Clarrie wasn’t badly hurt in the accident but he went to the hospital with Jean.

After her passing away in the hospital, Clarrie was left to find his own way back to where they were staying, covered in blood and having no wallet on him. A kindly taxi driver asked him if he needed a hand which was greatly appreciated.

Naughtin, Jean Greig has a headstone that says – In Loving Memory of My Dear Wife Jean Greig Naughtin Accidently killed Nov 4 1960. Aged 53 years.
