Notes – Rachael was born at Merino, Victoria to Daisy (nee Rodgers) and George McKnight. She had one sister, Aileen.
Rachael or Rae as she liked to be known, married Norman Poulton on the 7th February, 1927. By 1928 they were living and working in Tara at Sara Street where he was the baker. The census records are 1928- 1941 Sara Street, Tara Norman is a Baker and Rae is Home duty and then 1958 at Canomie, Tara Home duty and Norman graizer.
They stayed in that position until at least 1941 but may have been longer. They then bought Canomie where they had a merino stud. Rae’s children often won prizes for the best dressed at Balls, as she was a talented sewer and artist.
Rae’s parents lived at Warra after they came to Qld and it was here that they celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary in 1954. Norman also came from around Warra. Read here.
Rae and Norm held a large party to celebrate Esme’s 21st birthday, where heaters and log fires were needed to keep everyone comfortable. A large feast was served, no doubt much of that being created by Rae. Esme, their only daughter, married John Paterson. They also had a son Jack.
Apparently Rae was fined a pound in 1940 for not having a radio licence? I don’t know how that worked. She was also a good tennis player.
Rae has a headstone that reads – In loving Memory of Rachael Poulton. Died March 16th, 1960. Aged 54 Years.
