REIBELT, Joseph
Name – REIBELT, Joseph
Born – cir 1856
Died – 6/09/1942
Location – Number 42 Anglican Section
Mother – Anna Maria Kessler
Father – Johann Peter Jonas Reibelt
Notes – Joseph was born to Johann Peter Jonas and Anna Marie (nee Kessler) Reibelt around Crows Nest where his father, who had recently arrived in Australia, was working as a shepherd. His parents married in Germany in 1841. He had siblings of Johann, Heinrich, Peter, Jakob, Margaret, Jacob, Phillip and Balthasar.
Joseph worked as a timber sawyer and a contractor – of what I don’t know. He married Janet Duckworth in 1883 in Armidale, NSW. Soon after that they were living around Warwick. Joseph had eight children with Janet – Bueer, Walter, Robert, James, Alice, Allen, Norman and Janet. Janet (wife) took ill and was taken to a private hospital, but unfortunately died, with her youngest girl also Janet dying not long after her mother.
Joseph at the same time was already in hospital from an accident with a horse. (see article) He would have been a very busy man with seven kids aged from two to 14 to look after. The 1908 cencus has him at Inglewood labourer. He married Lilly Golland at Quirindi NSW in 1908. They had three children, but I think only the youngest lived past being a few years old. They were Alwyn, Lorna and Ivan.
Joseph was living at Brigalow Creek , Condamine as a contractor by 1913 because both his sons Walter and Robert enlisted in the AIF in WWI and had him as their next of kin living there. By 1917 Joseph had became a JP for the Condamine area. There is another Joseph Reibelt who died in 1928 from Meandarra and he was a shearer. In the 1925 roll info it has a Joseph and Joseph jnr who is a timber getter. But I haven’t found a birth for the younger one, but he must be connected. And this Joseph may have had a daugher called Gladys because she won a prise from writing into the newpapers in 1929 or so, and she lived at Meadarra.
In 1940, Joseph aged 81, Jacob 80, Phillip 78 and Walter 76 Yrs all attended the Pioneers Banquet held at Warwick, there combined ages 315 years! That’s an impressive family. Read here.
Joseph is buried with a headstone that says – In loving Memory of Joseph Reibelt Died 6th September, 1942. Aged 86 years.
His grandson Ben Ray is buried not far from him, he died in 1935. Ben’s (Joseph Leslie) mother was Alice May.
