SMALLACOMBE, Victoria
Name – SMALLACOMBE, Victoria
Born – 01/06/1885
Died – 7/11/1913
Location – No 7 Old Methodist Section
Mother – Mary McPherson
Father – Charles Turner Stevenson
Notes – Victoria was born in 1885 at Lill in Victoria to Charles and Mary Stevenson. Their other children were Margaret, Donald, Dugald, William, Agnes, Almora, Charles and Allan.
She is one of the smallest group of women who had an occupation on any rolls other than Home Duties as her census record shows in 1906 Lillimur domestic servant. I think she may have had to help support her family.
Victoria married Thomas Oliver Smallacombe in 1909 in Victoria and came straight to Queensland to live with the other Smallacombes at the 26 Mile, via Warra (which is Tara, but that is how the mail came then).
In the 1913 Roll Alice is with Thomas Snr and Mark at The Grove, 26 Mile Creek. Victoria is with Thomas Oliver at 26 Mile Creek and Eliza Catherine Robson is with Ernest at The Lookout, 26 Mile Creek. All at the 26 Mile. Victoria’s husband Thomas Oliver Smallacombe was the President of our Tara Shire Council for many years – hence we have Smallacome St, Tara.
Victoria’s sister Almora married Thomas’s brother Albert George in 1904. Albert and Almora came to Queensland with the rest of the family, but Almora wouldn’t go any more remote than Warra. They then returned to Victoria by 1920.
Victoria and Thomas had one son Edwin who was born in 1912. Family story goes that he was dropped on his head as a baby and it caused him to be disabled and was not able to walk properly. Edwin died in Victoria where his father returned to after the death of Victoria. Thomas remarried and had other children. I am not sure why Victoria died so young, maybe from child birth?
Victoria has a headstone that reads – Sweet to the memory of Victoria Smallacombe. Died 7th Nov, 1913 Aged 28 years.
