Notes – Stanley Bertie who was known by family and friends as Bertie, was born in England to Alice and Henry Spacey in 1894. His father was a ship’s carpenter. Bertie departed England on the ship Osterley on 21.06.1912 aged 18 years as a 3rd class passenger. Conract ticket number on the ship was No 403. He arrived in Sydney and listed his occupation as Sawyer.

From Sydney he eventually made his way to Tara where on the 1st January, 1916 he married Mary Ann Fitzgerald who was residing with her mother and two brothers on the Undulla Creek, not far from Tara. The couple had one daughter Alice who later went to school in Dalby.

In 1925 Mr Spacey put in a tender to enlarge the Upper Undulla Hall which was accepted. He must have followed his father’s occupation as a builder as well as being a farmer, as shown on the 1926 census as Stanley Bertie Spacey, Selector.

At the time of his death Bertie was the Secretary of the Tara Tennis Club and there is a story of him playing tennis at Gunbower against Undulla. The cause of his death resulted from being badly injured in a horse riding incident. Read the details here. There is a story of Mrs Spacey thanking various people and staff of the hospital after his very unfortunate and early death.
