YOULTEN, Josiah Frederick

Name – YOULTEN, Josiah Frederick
Born – 06/09/1860
Died – 5/08/1934
Location – No 15 Anglican Section
Mother – Mary Harris 1822 – 1865
Father – Elisha Youlten 1820 – 1865

Notes – Josiah was born to Elisha and Mary Youlten in 1860 at Huntley, Victoria.. His parents had 12 children in total however four of them died as infants or very young. Out of that four, three of them were called Josiah. They were really set on that name.

The first two lived 2 years, one year and the last was to be 15. The others in the family were Thomas Harris 1839, Elisha 1841, Mark 1850, Mary Harris 1852, Fanny 1857, Samuel 1859, Caronie Amelia 1862 and Lousia 1859.

The sadness continued. Elisha (father) died in 9th July 1865 from a head injury from a cart accident. Then Mary (mother) died 22nd August, 1865 of erysipelas steptpcoccus, an infection of face and head. This meant that the kids were put into the Melbourne Industrial Schools (orphanage) or care in Geelong where Louisa died.

I will attach that sad story. They usual sentence for these work houses was 7 yrs, but because he was so young Josiah had two 7 yr sentences put on him. Besides the above, Josiah’s brother Elisha was well known to the Victorian and NSW police and Elisha Snr had a couple of run ins with the constabulary as well.

Josiah Frederick seems to have become a painter as the only census records I found are in 1906 at Wonga Creek painter, 1919 at Booie, Kingaroy painter and 1929 till his death in 1934 at Tara as a painter. Other than that I know nothing about this man, only that he had a really hard life.
