Notes – Sarah was born to Elizabeth or Martha (two different names appear on her records) and William Nicolas in 1860.  She married George William Smith in 1883 at Muswellbrook, NSW.

It appears she was a woman who supported the charietys of the area and in particular, the Returned Services. Her son Dave (David Nicol) enlisted in 1916, thankfully he returned to Tara after the war. Her daughter, Dorothy remained unmarried and worked as far away as Longreach but returned to live with her parents, when they were both bed ridden.

Another son Arthur was born to Sarah and George, and also two more girls who were noted on George’s obituary as Mrs Armstrong and Mrs H Moore.

Sarah has a headstone that reads – In loving Memory of Sarah Josephine Smith. Died 29th July, 1948 Aged 88 years.
